VENETIA MINOR

WHERE VENETIANS TRY TO SURVIVE

Venice, the mythical city of water that was once a Serenissima Republic, today has 50,000 inhabitants, that is, the same population as one of the thousands of small towns that dot Italy. It remains hard to imagine how it had to be this big capital in the fifteenth and seventeenth century with hundreds of thousands of inhabitants and an aberrant speculation that thickened the little land of houses, churches and palaces. The town has suffered repeatedly in his history of impoverishment of the population, until the miserable conditions of the nineteenth century. The present situation is due to the expulsion -some call it emigration – of tens of thousands of people, both for desertification of arts and crafts, industries, small and medium enterprises and crafts, and both for takeoff unstoppable real estate market. The result is a city emptied, barbarized, prey to clichés and silly populism, governed by a shortsighted policy, Byzantine and intrusive. Whatever has a single direction, the intensive exploitation of tourism: hotels, pizzerias, and shops of Murano-style glass, Chinese masks and bags.
For the rest, the future just is not there.

IN THE MAZE

Restlessness, in a way; need to change your actual state; need of something new; curiosity and some other thousands things. Some say: “I buy a boat and sail away and never be back”. A psychologist could discuss this sentence long. As a result, is it only a wish, or an outburst of disappointment? Cause, if you really do that, you’ll discover it’s not a game. And most of all, it’s no dream –or solution- at all. Real reality it is, and not the easiest. Better fly away a couple weeks –say Virgin Islands or Fiji- and you’re done. You do not need a journey, but a simple vacation.
